No-limit Texas Hold ‘em can be an incredibly fun game, and it is hands down, (no pun intended) the most popular poker game played the world over. Dependent on who is playing, and the level of experience games can be enjoyed by all, or they can quickly get out of hand. High stakes games are for players that have built an appropriate bankroll to budget their high stakes play. Selling your mom’s favorite watch without permission at Big Leroy’s Pawn Shop is not a good move, nor will it ever lead to success in the world of poker. Work for your bankroll and play the game appropriate to what you’ve earned. You’ll respect your game and play better poker by observing that rule of responsibility. With that being said, let’s say you’ve done the work to build your bankroll, and have the ability to get involved in a no-limit, high stakes game. The reason to play a high stakes game is to win big, and enjoy the action. It’s exciting and holds more potential than any of the nickel and dime stuff you play with your friends. Let’s consider some strategy to help you make the most of your effort. Learn Your Opponent Learn to read you opponent as quickly as possible. Are they tight/aggressive, are they a true fish, are they a shark, etc. Get a good read on them, work to learn their tells. As soon as you know who the weakling is, get them involved and when it comes down to the two of you; take that large, lucrative pot |

Take Notes This will go hand in hand with learning your opponent, and can play greatly to your advantage. It is a simple process of notating what you’ve learned and seen in observing your competitors. What they did with a particular starting hand, when they bluffed, what they folded, etc. Grab a pencil and a notepad or note cards, and take advantage of being able to refer to your notes. Everyone does better on an open book or open note test. Set your pride aside and starting jotting. Bluffing You can steal the blinds and continue the skyline construction of your poker chips stack by bluffing early in a game. This is dependent on how many people want to play through the river. If this is the case, a strong hand will generally take it, but take notes, and you can figure the percentage of how often you find yourself or others at the table in the showdown. Aggressive Play If you’ve got the goods, you’ve got to play aggressively, by check raising, and betting in a manner that will keep others in the game. This is high stakes, so make the most of it when you have drawn to the nut hand! If not, you will have wasted an opportunity, and there’s no way to win at a no-limit game without a level of aggressiveness! Know The Odds Is it worth betting? If you want to build a hand in a no-limit game and see the river, you have to know if it’s worth the amount of money you are putting into the pot. If you’re chasing a straight, flush, or any other monster hand, chances are you are donating a portion of your stack to someone else, and you cannot give away freebies in any way and expect to win at no-limit. Most poker sites offer tutorials on calculating odds, and have odds calculators that are fun to play with. Learn From The Masters If you have a favorite player and admire their playing style as well as their success, there’s a good chance that you can learn a lot more from them. Many are published writers and their poker books are available to but at a variety of stores such as Pokershopping.com, Barnes and Noble, and Walden Books. Many of today’s top pros also endorse and operate their own websites, so check for helpful tips and strategies. Have Fun Having fun is often the most overlooked aspect of any game. If a game isn’t any fun, then why are you playing it? Most people already have a serious lack of fun with their “day job,” so why not do yourself a favor and stay focused in your poker game, but have fun. A fun environment is exactly what is needed to get players to loosen up and take some risks that may play into your hands. Hopefully these tips are some food for though. Bottom line: you want to stay focused and keep your eyes on the prize. If you’re investing in a high stakes game, patience, persistence, and light-hearted attitude may turn your investment around quickly and offer you quite a return |
